Lady Flyer keglers hand Lady Billies year’s first loss
Maryvale’s girls bowling team posted its eight straight win Monday — and ended its opponent’s streak at the same time — when it toppled previously-undefeated Williamsville South in non-league action, 5-2.
The Lady Flyers took three of the four possible points through the first two games and split the final game to secure the win. Maryvale also took the total pinfall point by 100 pins.
Melanie Hannon led the way for the Lady Flyers’ “A” team with her 207-603 set, while Jamie Michalewski added a 192-536 set. Megan Koscinski contributed a 190-511 set, while Morgan Walsh had a 153 high game. Maryvale’s “B” team, meanwhile, saw Jessica Scheib lead the way with her 194-542 set, while Kayla Ryan added a 216-518 set. Kayli Christ threw a pair of 170 games in her 494 set, while Michelle Pascolini added a 191 high game.
Maryvale entered Monday’s match brimming with confidence after shutting out Lackawanna in league play January 18, 7-0. Hannon averaged 225 on the day, with a 257 high game, to finish with an “A” team leading 675 set. Michalewski added a 182-501 set, while Walsh threw a 198-496 set. Koscinski added a 172 high game.
The Lady Flyers’ “B” team, meanwhile, was led by Ryan’s 199-572 set.
Maryvale’s boys team also defeated South in Monday’s non-league clash, 6½-½. Ricky Benthien led the Flyers’ “A” team efforts with his 265-256-178-699 set, while Nick Koscinski rolled games of 223 and 214. Matt Scheib and Mike Benthien both had 210 games to help provide the “A” team’s dominance.
“While the match didn’t count towards our league record, it was nice for us to get a win with some solid team bowling,” boys coach James Gabor said. “Ricky has been real solid for us this year and has been especially good the last few weeks.”
The boys (4-4, 3-4 division) weren’t able to match the girls’ success against Lackawanna, however, as they fell to the Steelers, 5-2. Strong efforts were turned in by Ricky Benthien (208-221-243-672 set) and Alex Stroud (246-628 set).
“Our ‘A’ team struggled while our ‘B’ team battled, but Lackawanna was better than us that day,” Gabor said. “They got solid efforts from both their ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams and had several bowlers with honor scores. It was a tough loss for us as we had identical records coming into the match.”
Maryvale returned to action Tuesday against Pioneer, but information about that match was not available at press time. The Flyers finish off the league portion of their season with matches Monday against Springville and next Thursday, Feb. 2, at Depew.
