Photo by John RusacPurchase color photos at www.BeeNews.com After spending 11 years working for large accounting firms, crunching numbers on intensive audits and filing tax returns for corporations, Tim Frier decided to use his talents in a smaller capacity.

He wanted to interact more with people and small businesses. So he packed up his laptop and moved into his basement. From there he started Frier Accounting, a full-service accounting firm in Cheektowaga.

“The places where I worked were large, and I wanted to work in a smaller environment,” Friar said from the office he set up in his Hillwood Drive home. “I wanted to do it on my own.”

Frier, a 1993 graduate of Cheektowaga Central High School, earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University at Buffalo in 2000. One month after graduation, he began working for an accounting firm. He passed the certified public accountant exam in 2008.

But by 2011, Frier was ready to go it alone.

“I was doing large audits,” Frier said. “I did probably two of the biggest audits that the firm had. I was dealing with people, but I wanted it more on a small scale. The tax returns I was doing were everywhere from individuals to consolidated corporations. But the clients they had were mainly higher income individuals with businesses. I want to stay more focused on the individuals and small businesses in the communities.”

Frier Accounting offers tax preparation, bookkeeping and fraud protection to individuals and small businesses. And the biggest selling point is the small prices.

“What I offer to customers is CPA experience from a larger firm, but without the high fees,” Frier said. “My prices are low compared to that. My tax returns start out at $50 for a simple 1040EZ. I do individual returns and business returns.”

By keeping his prices low, Frier said he is able to give people who thought they couldn’t afford a CPA the chance to work with one and keep better control over their finances.

Frier is also a certified fraud examiner and will work with small businesses to prevent, detect and deter cases of fraud in the workplace.

“If they have a problem with their internal controls, or something is going on that they might know about, and they’re not sure how to handle it, they can come to me,” he said.

Frier said customers can either meet him at his home, or he will go to them.
