Police officer ends 28-year career
After 28 years of service with the Cheektowaga Police Department, Officer Michael Dorobiala is calling it quits.
Dorobiala started his career with the department on Feb. 7, 1984, after working as an Erie County corrections officer for five years. His last day was Monday.
Over the years, Dorobiala worked several assignments. He was one of the original members of the Communications Unit, where he often was assigned as the acting sergeant and was responsible for writing the sergeant’s manual. He was instrumental in the training and civilianization of the front desk and dispatch center.
Dorobiala also performed road patrol duty and for the last 17 years was assigned to the Accident Investigation Unit as a certified accident investigator. In 1995, he was presented with an award by the Erie County STOP-DWI Program for the number of DWI arrests he made that year.
In 1996, he received recognition for assisting in dignitary protection details for presidential candidate Sen. Robert Dole and vice presidential candidate Jack Kemp.
In August 1996, Dorobiala received a letter of appreciation from the FBI for the work he did in assisting the bureau in an investigation into drug gang activity in the Lovejoy section of town.
Dorobiala has received several letters of commendation including the Distinguished Conduct Award in 1989 for evacuating several people from a burning building at the Idylwood Apartments. He has also received numerous letters from citizens in town thanking him for helping them and for the professionalism he displayed in dealing with the public.
