Catholic Charities to offer continuing education program

Catholic Charities of Buffalo’s Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development will offer a continuing education training titled “A Taste of Motivational Interviewing: The Spirit” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, March 19, at The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 225 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga.

The training will focus on the relationship between trauma responsive care and motivational interviewing skills and interventions that support a safe and trusting environment. Attendees can expect to learn about the fundamentals of motivational interviewing, key communication skills and exchanging information. The training will count for six live contact hours and is open to social workers, licensed mental health counselors and credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselors. Certificates will be given upon training completion.

Instructor Cheryl Martin has 46 years of experience as a registered nurse. She has a trauma certificate from the University at Buffalo’s School of Social Work, and is a certified alcoholism and substance abuse counselor and a certified screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment trainer through the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. She currently works as an integrated health trainer and clinical consultant for Coordinated Care Services Inc.

Early bird registration of $100 is available through Friday, Feb. 16. General registration after Feb. 16 costs $119.
